Man United down Newcastle

Manchester United travelled to Newcastle on Saturday as they looked to bounce back from their 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham last game week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a number of changes to his regular starting line-up, which did seem to be something of a risk.

And when Luke Shaw guided the ball into his own net inside two minutes, United did look set for a rough evening.

However, Harry Maguire would equalise 23 minutes in. The Red Devils then struggled to find that spark needed to bag a second goal.

But a late flurry of action would eventually see Man United come away with a somewhat flattering 4-1 win.

All of Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford were on target from the 86th to 96th minute, ensuring United returned to Manchester with three points.

Solskjaer on van de Beek

As mentioned above, despite equalising fairly early in the game, Man United did struggle to create an awful lot for large periods.

However, once Donny van de Beek was introduced off the bench, United looked a much better side.

Granted, he did not score against Newcastle, but the Dutchman’s impact was pretty clear regardless, with his ability to speed up play crucial on the day.

So, this begs the question, why is van de Beek yet to start a league game for United?

In his sub appearances and starts in the League Cup, the former Ajax standout has often looked one of the best players on the pitch.

As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since inevitably been drawn on van de Beek’s lack of minutes, with the Norwegian quick to assure that the midfielder will get his game time:

“He’ll get his game time. He’s been fantastic in the group.

“I think you see today and in training, he’s so neat and tidy, I don’t think he lost the ball once.

“It’s about finding the balance in the team. We’ve won 4-1 today and you’re asking why I didn’t start one of the players. He’ll have a very good impact on the team.”
