Updates on the fitness of a pair of Liverpool stars have been forthcoming online this evening, ahead of the club’s meeting with Ajax.

VVD blow

The major talking point surrounding the Premier League champions over the last 24 hours has of course centered on the club’s injury woes.

Jurgen Klopp’s men made the trip to Goodison Park yesterday afternoon, for a Merseyside derby clash.

A thrilling 90 minutes eventually saw both sides forced to settle for a point, but it was Virgil van Dijk’s early exit from proceedings which grabbed the headlines in the matchup’s aftermath.

The Dutch stalwart was on the receiving end of a horror challenge from Jordan Pickford with just 6 minutes on the clock, with fans of the Reds having since been forced to anxiously wait it out for an update on van Dijk’s wellbeing.

Word on the extent of the 29-year-old’s problem was indeed forthcoming earlier this evening, as the worst fears of all associated with Liverpool were confirmed.

Van Dijk has suffered knee ligament damage, and will be forced to go under the knife to repair the damage.

The former Southampton man, as a result, is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

Thiago & Alisson latest

Van Dijk, however, was not the only member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad to have picked up a fitness problem at Goodison.

Late in the fiery clash, a reckless Richarlison lunge left Thiago Alcantara hobbled, with the Spanish international having struggled through the final minutes.

Subsequent reports suggested that Thiago was dealing with swelling in his knee, only resulting in concern spreading further amongst the Liverpool faithful.

And, as confirmed this evening, the Reds summer addition has indeed picked up an injury. He is therefore set to miss the club’s upcoming Champions League meeting with Ajax on Wednesday night.

Thankfully, however, Thiago’s problem is not thought to be a serious one.

As per the Liverpool Echo:

‘He is understood to have not suffered a serious injury in the incident having undergone medical tests on Saturday at the Spire Hospital in Mossley Hill.’

‘However, Thiago is set to miss the Reds’ game against Ajax on Wednesday and the club will gauge his recovery after that.’

In a further relief for the Premier League champions, meanwhile, it has also been claimed that goalkeeper Alisson, who has been badly missed of late, is ‘ahead of schedule’ in his recovery from a shoulder issue.
