Chelsea top Premier League table after dominant win over Newcastle
Newcastle vs Chelsea
Premier League football returned to our screens a short time ago.
The first clash of the week pitted Newcastle United against Chelsea.
The two sides headed into the tie in rather contrasting form.
Chelsea were unbeaten in eight across all competitions, having conceded just one goal in their last six outings across all competitions.
Newcastle, meanwhile, had a pretty average start to the campaign, which had see them notch just one win from their previous four Premier League ties.
And when all was said and done at St Jame’s Park, the tie would play out true to form.
Newcastle, lining out with a back-five, started the tie pretty well – winning a corner inside two minutes.
It would be the visitors who had the first decent chance of the tie though, with Timo Werner bursting down the left and forcing a good save out of Karl Darlow.
Mateo Kovacic, who scored a brace for his country in midweek, then fired an effort over 7 minutes in as Chelsea attempted to break down a deep Newcastle side.
Hakim Ziyech then whipped a superb ball on his left foot to Tammy Abraham, whose headed effort was well saved.
And after a dominant start, Chelsea finally took the lead inside nine minutes.
Mason Mount smashed his pass across the Newcastle box, which Federico Fernandez – who was under pressure from Ben Chilwell – turned into his own net.
Chelsea came close to doubling their lead 14 minutes in, but Tammy Abraham was unable to connect with Werner’s cross.
The Londoners continued to pepper Newcastle’s goal and Werner should have made it 2-0 half an hour in when he found himself with a clear shot on goal. However, the German would direct his effort well wide.
The first 45 eventually drew to a close with Frank Lampard probably somewhat aggrieved his side were not already out of sight.
Chelsea go top
The second 45 would begin with Steve Bruce’s side having a decent amount of the ball.
But once again, Chelsea should have made it 2-0. This time Fabian Schar dawdled on the ball, allowing Werner to come in and snatch it. However, the forward was unable to get a shot off or square the ball.
Chelsea were then nearly made to pay for their missed chances but Isaac Hayden, who was one on one with Edouard Mendy, smashed his effort over before play was called back for a foul.
Joelinton then skied a shot just before the hour mark as the Magpies begun to garner a foothold in the game.
However, luckily for Chelsea, Tammy Abraham would step up to hand Chelsea a much-needed two-goal lead.
Werner burst forward before slipping in Abraham who calmly slotted past Darlow.

Sean Longstaff then clipped the bar from a long-range strike with just under 20 minutes left.
Timo Werner finally looked to have earned his goal for the day but his strike was ruled out for offside. Said effort was the hitman’s last involvement of the day as he was subbed off for Callum Hudson-Odoi moments later.
Newcastle had a few more decent chances in the tie but a Mendy save and Andy Caroll hitting the side netting meant Bruce’s outfit left empty-handed.
Chelsea have now moved up, temporarily at least, to 1st in the table – and look to be very much in the title picture this season.
