Brazil’s COVID-19 death toll nears 250,000

Brazil registered 527 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 246,504, the Ministry of Health reported on Sunday.
   
The ministry also reported 29,026 more cases, bringing the national count to 10,168,174.
Brazil has the second highest number of deaths, after the United States, and the third highest number of cases, behind the United States and India.
   
The state of Sao Paulo, the most populous in the country, is the hardest hit by the pandemic, with a total of 57,799 deaths and 1,975,927 cases, followed by Rio de Janeiro, with 32,173 deaths and 572,007 cases.
  
 Brazil is going through a second wave of the pandemic, a situation that has resulted in an increase in cases and deaths since December.
   
Currently, the South American country has a rate at 4,839 cases and 117 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
  
The nation began its vaccination program against COVID-19 more than a month ago. So far, more than 5.8 million people (2.74 percent of the population) have received the first dose, and 1,115,832 people (0.53 percent of the population) have received both doses.
